Freedom

What do you imagine when you think of freedom?

Many of us imagine whatever it would take to create the conditions in our lives to be able to do whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted.

Perhaps freedom means having more money or fewer responsibilities or no restrictions on where you can go? Sound familiar?

Why do we seek this sort of liberty?

In the United States we have sanctified this sort of freedom and autonomy into our very constitution.

Perhaps it is because we believe that achieving this sort of freedom is analogous with being happy or fulfilled.

But let’s examine this assumption for a moment.

It is fair to say that no one now or in all of history has achieved the capacity to do whatever they want at anytime.

This simply isn’t in alignment with the laws of nature.

If we hang our happiness and satisfaction on an idea that is not in accord with natural law then we are doomed at the outset.

The good news is that this is not freedom. It is actually a form of separation or independence.

And it is painfully isolating and binding and simply cannot lead to happiness.

True freedom it turns out comes when we realize that we are not and never were separate from the structures and processes of the cosmos.

We are interwoven and interdependent with all of it.

Nothing has ever happened to you or by you alone.

This means that freedom is a quality shared by all and available to you always.

Achieving it is a process of deepening in intimacy and brings us closer to others and into greater alignment with natural law.
